Lenten Series 2006:
“From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians.”
Tuesdays, March 7 thru March 28, 6:30 PM.

The 2006 Lenten Series will feature the program “From Jesus to Christ: the First Christians” as broadcast on PBS. This program analyzes the early growth of the fledgling faith based upon the life, death and resurrection of an itinerant Galilean preacher and miracle worker named Jesus. The companion book, From Jesus to Christ by Paula Fredericksen, will assist our viewing of the programs and enliven our discussion of the material. The Lenten Series will meet on Tuesday evenings in the parish hall starting with a simple communal meal of soup and bread commencing on March 7, 2006, at 6:30 p.m., and we will gather for four Tuesday evenings from March 7 through March 28 at the same bat time (6:30 p.m.) and at the same bat channel (the parish hall). If you have any questions, or if you’d like to volunteer to provide the meal for one of our gatherings, please contact Shawn at church, or at 631-8548.

Adult Inquirers’ Class.

Bishop Wolfe will be at St. Luke’s on Sunday, May 14 (Mothers’ Day). In anticipation of this, Fr. Jim will lead an Adult Inquirers’ Class – Tuesday evenings, April 4 thru May 9, 6:30–8:30pm, in the parish hall. Anyone who desires to be Confirmed, or Received into the Episcopal Church, or Reaffirm their Baptismal Vows (see explanation below) should so indicate on the sign-up sheet in the narthex.

Confirmation is the sacramental rite in which a person makes a mature, informed, and public affirmation of those vows which were made on their behalf at baptism (i.e., they accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, and pledge to live lives conforming to the teachings of Christ). Also, Confirmation makes a person an “official” member of the Episcopal Church.

Reception into the Episcopal is that rite for persons who have already been Confirmed in another church (e.g., the Catholic Church) whose bishops are in the apostolic line of succession. Through this rite, persons transfer their affiliation to the Episcopal Church.

Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows is that rite in which a person who has already been Confirmed in the Episcopal Church, or who has been Received into the Episcopal Church, can reaffirm their Baptismal vows. You could compare this to, say, the renewal of one’s marriage vows.

Monthly at St. Luke's Church:

Breakfast at St. Paul’s.

If you can help, meet us at the church at 8 am, or at St. Paul’s at 8:30 am. If you have questions, contact Mike Jones at 631-8197.

Women’s Bible Study Group.

Every second Saturday following the altar guild meeting, you are invited to come to a bible study on Friendship. It is a study that will not take too much preparation but will be so rewarding to discuss. Following the study a light lunch will be served. So come once a month to study with your sisters in Christ for an hour and a half and go home feeling good. Call Marcia Streepy, at 631-8548, if you are able to attend.

Altar Guild Meeting.

The Altar Guild meets at 10 am the 2nd Saturday of each month in the Parish Hall. We will meet March 11th.

Play Pokeno.

Young at Heart meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month, from Noon ’til 2 PM. Bring a sack lunch and be ready for good conversation and a few games of Pokeno for a prize of $5. You don’t need to bring money, no work, just a good time in the afternoon. Call the parish office for more information.

A form of daily prayer, designed to be offered in 10 minutes while sitting at your computer, is provided by the Jesuit Communications Centre in Dublin. Acces the site by clicking here. If you'd like to read through the Bible in one year, visit this site and you'll be presented with a passage from the Old and New Testaments that change each day.
