Charles
Stegner is an alumnus of the Kansas City Art Institute and studied under
portrait painter Frank Szasz and other accomplished artists. He has exhibited
at a variety of juried and one-man shows and has originals in numerous
collections. He worked as an illustrator in the public sector for thirty-five
years to allow himself the luxury of being independent and true to his
own art.
Charles
is active as a teacher of painting in all mediums, and in a variety of
subjects including portraiture, landscapes and life drawing.
Charles
views himself as a "colorist." While he exhibits an impressionistic
style of painting in his own work, he encourages individuality, preferring
to let the student "break the rules." Through illustration and
praise, he gently guides and directs their efforts with a subtlety of
style and experience that allows them to take only the parts they need
to remain true to their own beliefs and standards, using any medium they
choose. His philosophy is, "Art should be entertaining." The
only rules are those which helps the student derive the look, feel or
pleasure they are seeking.
